How to Draw Jackie Robinson Step by Step Easy
Step 1.
To draw the baseball legend, Jackie Robinson, we should first start with some very basic construction guide lines. Using a 2H or harder pencil, lightly sketch in your guide lines as seen here. He's going to be hitting a baseball with a bat, so his arms should be reaching over his left shoulder. These lines don't have to be perfect, since we will erase them later. They are just guides.
Step 2.
Next, it's a good idea to sketch in the complete human form without clothing. By doing this, it will ensure that the figure is proportionate and will look accurate after we put on clothes. These lines should be fairly basic, lacking detail in the head and hands. Robinson was an athlete, so he should have a fit physique.
Step 3.
Now that all our guide lines are in place, let's start working on the face. Make sure that the eyes line up with the middle of the head. The nose is half way between the eyes and chin, and the mouth is half way between the nose and chin. The chin does not need to be drawn since it'll be covered up by his shoulder. Since his has just hit a ball, make sure his eyes are looking upwards. Don't forget to draw his ear.
Step 4.
Let's continue working on the head by drawing the hat and hair. Be sure to draw a tiny portion of the "B" (for Brooklyn) on the front of the cap. Notice how the bill of the cap has an arch to it. We should only see a small portion of hair between the cap and ear. Go ahead and draw the side of his neck as well.
Step 5.
Draw the right arm stretching across the front of the body, reaching back towards the bat. You do not need to draw the hand, because it'll be mostly covered up by the left hand in the next step. Be sure to draw the sleeve of the uniform, which should have a couple of large, vertical wrinkles because of the position of the arm. The Dodgers wore dark blue undershirts, which peaked out from underneath their white uniforms. Draw a small portion of the undershirt sleeve beneath the overshirt sleeve.
Step 6.
Now we can draw the left arm. The bicep of the left arm will be tucked behind the forearm, so we won't see much of it save for some of the wrinkled sleeve. The hand should be gripping the handle of the bat. Draw a few fingers of the right hand behind the left hand.
Step 7.
Drawing the bat is easy. Just make sure that your lines are perfectly straight and that it gets fatter at the end. Use a ruler if you need to. Notice how the tip of the bat is pointing down slightly, rather than up.
Step 8.
Let's go back to the body and draw the upper torso. There should be a few large wrinkles in the uniform, but make sure that they are mostly pointing upwards. Draw the buttons down the center, while making sure that they are evenly spaced apart from one another.
Step 9.
Draw the belt around the waste and the team name, "Dodgers" across the chest. The name will not be 100% visible because of the folds in the fabric. Notice how the first "D" is smashed inside a fold, and the "S" is hidden beneath the left arm. Also notice how part of the belt is hidden beneath the folds of the shirt.
Step 10.
Old fashioned baseball uniforms featured very baggy pants. When drawing the legs, be sure to draw a lot of extra fabric and folds below the knees. The pants end about half way between the knees and ankles, where they are tucked into the socks.
Step 11.
Next, draw the form-fitting socks and shoes. Notice how the right foot is pointing back, away from the body, while the left foot is planted firmly on the ground.
Step 12.
Next, ink your image using a brush and ink, or Micron markers. Be patient, and make sure not to accidentally go over any unneeded construction lines. After your ink has dried, erase your pencil marks with a kneaded eraser.
Step 13.
To add a greater sense of depth to the image, you can add shadow. Since the uniform is white, don't go too heavy on shading the uniform. A few shadows under the larger folds will do just fine. Adding shadow will help bring your image to life!
Step 14.
And that's about it! If you need to make any corrections, use white ink or opaque white paint. And that is how you draw Jackie Robinson, the first African American major league baseball player.
